Bio
Patrick Kilvington was born in the United Kingdom in 1922 and arrived in Australia in 1950. He was an Impressionist painter in oil concentrating mostly on rural and genre subjects. Kilvington studied at the Bromley Art School in Kent in the United Kingdom. From 1940 to 1948 he served in the British Army. He began full-time painting in 1971. During his career, Kilvington held over 35 shows since 1971 including one-man exhibitions at Rockhampton Gallery in 1971; Townsville Gallery in 1972; McInnes Gallery, Brisbane in 1972 to 1980; Adelaide Festival in 1974 and 1975; Strawberry Hill, Sydney in 1973; Fisher Gallery, New Zealand in 1979; Greythorn Galleries, Melbourne in 1982; Greenhill Galleries, Adelaide in 1983; Geo Styles (Melbourne Phar Lap Show), in 1983; participated at Strawberry Hills Gallery, Sydney in 1973, 1974, 1978 and 1979; Creative 92 Gallery, Toowoomba, Queensland in 1975 and 1977; Surfers Paradise in 1975 and 1976; Holdsworth Gallery, Sydney in 1976; Represented Australia in the invitation Horse Painters of the World exhibition at Tyron Galleries, London, United Kingdom in 1980; Galloway Galleries, Brisbane in 1980 and 1981; Greythorn Galleries, Melbourne in 1981 and the Stanthorpe Gallery, Queensland in 1983.
Kilvington’s realism depicted in his paintings came from a personally held conviction that a painter must be familiar with his subject and he attended many rodeos where he studied, sketched and photographed the sequence of horse bodies in action. Kilvington’s skill at depicting horses and cattle in action is well known and in 1979 he exhibited three paintings in London at the “Horse Painters of the World” exhibition. All three of his paintings sold on Opening Night. Such is his popularity that of the 14 one-man shows he has held, 11 of the shows have been sell-outs. In 1980 Kilvington’s work was featured on the television programme “Today Tonight”.
He has also won a number of art prizes, including the Royal National Repatriation Prize, Canberra in 1971; the Royal Brisbane Show in 1980; and S.G.I.O., Brisbane in 1979. Kilvington also completed a number of important commissions, including two prints published in 1978; One First Day cover, Commemorative Arakoon Mail Service in 1978; record cover The Bangtail Muster for recording LP of same name by Ted Egan in 1976; magazine cover, Stamp News in January 1979; Calendar, State Government Insurance Office, Queensland (Collectors Series Number Four), in 1979. Patrick Kilvington died in 1990 and his paintings are represented in a number of public collections, namely: Rockhampton City; Gold Coast City and Queensland State Parliament (new Parliament House); Munich University, as well as in the private collections of H.R.H. Princess Anne; Viscount Gainsborough; South African Ambassador to Australia, Mr Mills; Hon Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen, former Premier of Queensland; and many other private collections in Australia and overseas.
