Bio

Adrian George Feint (28 June 1894 – 25 April 1971) was a distinguished Australian artist renowned for his meticulous bookplates, floral oil paintings, and contributions to commercial art and illustration. Born in Narrandera, New South Wales, Feint was the eldest of three children. He exhibited an early passion for drawing, often embellishing his school exercise books. In 1912, he enrolled at the Sydney Art School, studying under prominent artists Julian Ashton and Elioth Gruner. His education was briefly interrupted when he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in 1916. Feint served with the 15th Field Ambulance on the Western Front during World War I and was commended for gallantry near Péronne, France, in 1918. After the war, he was granted leave to study at the Académie Julien in Paris. Upon returning to Australia, Feint immersed himself in the art scene. He co-directed the Grosvenor Gallery in Sydney from 1924 to 1928, showcasing artists like Thea Proctor and Margaret Preston. Feint specialized in bookplate design, creating intricate and personalized designs for bibliophiles. His work in this domain gained international recognition, with an exhibition held at the Library of Congress in 1930. Additionally, he contributed illustrations to Sydney Ure Smith’s publications, Art in Australia and The Home. In the late 1930s, Feint shifted his focus to oil painting, studying under Margaret Preston. He became known for his serene depictions of Australian flora, coastal landscapes, and still lifes. His works were featured in exhibitions across Australia and are held in several major public collections. Feint was openly gay during a time when homosexuality was criminalized in Australia. He maintained a discreet yet visible presence in Sydney's social circles, navigating the complexities of his identity with subtlety. Feint lived modestly in a flat in Elizabeth Bay until his death in 1971. His legacy endures through his artworks, which continue to be celebrated for their technical precision and artistic merit.
